WNBA Rookies Watch – The First Week for the Historic Draft Class. – Women's Basketball News and Opinions

The 2024 WNBA season has commenced, marking the 28th year of the league. This season is notable for several reasons: the introduction of charter flights for regular-season games, increased television ratings, and a surge in substantial endorsement deals for players. This renewed interest is largely attributed to a promising rookie class, which includes not just Caitlin Clark but also Angel Reese, Cameron Brink, and others.

With the conclusion of the first week of the 2024 WNBA regular season, it is an opportune time to review the initial performances of the rookie players. A weekly recap, the “WNBA Rookies Watch,” will be provided, continuing from last season’s successful series. The first week’s analysis covers games from May 14th to May 21st. Subscribers can receive updates on rookie performances, international basketball, and women’s college basketball rankings directly in their inbox.

WNBA Rookies Watch – Week 1 Highlights

1. Caitlin Clark – Guard, Indiana Fever
Clark, the #1 draft pick, has shown promise despite early struggles with turnovers and shooting efficiency. She averages 17.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. After challenging matchups against Connecticut and New York, she improved significantly in subsequent games, notably scoring 22 points with 6 rebounds and 8 assists against New York on the road, and 17 points with 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks against Connecticut. Despite her team’s 0-4 record, Clark’s individual performance reflects her potential to adapt and excel.

2. Angel Reese – Forward, Chicago Sky
Reese, selected 7th overall, has made an impactful start, averaging 11.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game over two games. In her debut against the Dallas Wings, she nearly achieved a double-double with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Despite a shooting slump with a 34.8% field goal percentage, her performances indicate her readiness and capability as a forward in the WNBA.

3. Rickea Jackson – Forward, LA Sparks
Jackson, the #4 draft pick, has been impressive, averaging 9.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game with a 50% shooting percentage. She initially struggled but quickly found her footing, especially notable in a game against the Las Vegas Aces where she scored 13 points on 83.3% shooting. Her performance showcases her potential as a reliable forward for the Sparks.

4. Aaliyah Edwards – Forward, Washington Mystics
Edwards, picked 6th overall, has demonstrated solid performances, averaging 7.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 52% from the field. Her most notable game was against the Seattle Storm, where she recorded 9 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Edwards is proving to be a valuable player with consistent defensive contributions.

5. Cameron Brink – Forward, LA Sparks
Brink, the #2 draft pick, has been recognized for her defensive potential, averaging 6.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. Her best performance came in her debut with 11 points and 2 blocks. Despite some struggles, her stats, including a 46.7% field goal percentage and a 40% three-point shooting rate, highlight her defensive prowess and future potential.

Honorable Mention: Kate Martin – Guard, Las Vegas Aces
As a second-round pick, Martin’s achievement of securing a roster spot with the defending champions is commendable. Averaging 1.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in 20 minutes of play, her field goal percentage remains low at 12.5%. Nevertheless, her ability to gain playing time on such a competitive team underscores her potential and determination.
