Locked On Women's Basketball: Why Satou Sabally is a WNBA unicorn

The Next, a 24/7/365 women’s basketball newsroom

The Next: A basketball newsroom brought to you by The IX. 24/7/365 women’s basketball coverage, written, edited and photographed by our young, diverse staff and dedicated to breaking news, analysis, historical deep dives and projections about the game we love.

Megdal starts off the show by explaining to listeners the concept of a WNBA unicorn. “Webster’s [Dictionary] defines a unicorn as a mythical animal,” he explains. “The idea is that there’s only one. And that’s interesting to me, because there’s not a definition that says there can only be one. And I say all that because we are in the era of the unicorn when it comes to women’s basketball, particularly at the WNBA level.”

Add Locked On Women’s Basketball to your daily routine

Here at The Next, in addition to the 24/7/365 written content our staff provides, we also host the daily Locked On Women’s Basketball podcast. Join us Monday through Saturday each week as we discuss all things WNBA, collegiate basketball, basketball history and much more. Listen wherever you find podcasts or watch on YouTube.

Megdal then goes onto recap conversations he’s had with head coaches — Latricia Trammell of the Dallas Wings and Sandy Brondello fo the New York Liberty — that capture what it means to have a unicorn on your team. When Megdal asks Trammell how the Wings can best use Sabally, she responds by acknowledging the forward’s uniqueness. “She’s just that unicorn,” Trammell says. “She’s going to have to play multiple positions for us.”

Megdal then plays back a conversation he had with Brondello, also focusing on Sabally and and how the Wings are using her as more of a playmaker. “I mean, Satou is an amazing player,” Brondello says. “You got these players, their skill set just continues to go to another level. It’s really positionless basketball, and Satou can do it at three levels.”
