Locked On Women's Basketball: Curt Miller on the L.A. experience

California here you come ☀️

Can’t decide what to do this sunny season? How about an all-expenses paid weekend trip for two to LA to watch both the LA Sparks and Angel City FC next month? Problem solved.

Complete with sweet swag from our friends at Birdies, take in some WNBA action in premium seats when the LA Sparks host the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces on July 5th.

  • Then catch Angel City vs. the reigning NWSL champs, Gotham FC, on July 6th in style before the Olympic break. In addition to two premium tickets which include warm up field passes, the winners will also walk away with jerseys.

Be part of the women’s sports movement and enter to win today.

Megdal and Miller open the show by discussing Miller’s approach to 2024. “Going into the year, there was a lot of excitement in the way free agency took hold,” Miller says. He describes the changes that took place in the offseason, such as the departure of power forward Nneka Ogwumike to the Seattle Storm, and how they opened up new possibilities for the Sparks. “It was really exciting following the college basketball season,” Miller adds. “Especially knowing that you were going to have two outstanding picks.”

One of those picks, Cameron Brink, exited Tuesday night’s game against the Connecticut Sun with what appeared to be a knee injury. The injury has now been confirmed to be an ACL-tear, but at the time of the recording, Megdal and Miller did not know a definitive diagnosis. But, for anyone watching the game, it was obvious that something had gone wrong. “It’s a heartbreaking thing, I know, for everyone watching,” Megdal says. And Miller agrees. “It’s very raw this morning,” he says. “My heart is out. Our prayer warriors are out for Cameron right now. But also, I look at it as, you know … what this opportunity could do, potentially open a door for someone.”

Later on, Megdal and Miller discuss other developments within the Sparks organization and the WNBA at-large, such as the use of Second Spectrum. “We’re all navigating it,” Miller says. “But you know, the deeper analytics, more than just the traditional stat lines, have been fun to watch. Maybe they open some eyes to blind spots.” They also discuss the new charter flights the league is enabled to fly on. “Charters have been outstanding,” Miller says. “We’re fortunate for the growth and where the game has gone … it’s just a really exciting time for women’s basketball.”
