In one of the more shocking movements during WNBA free agency this year, Sydney Colson has signed a one-year deal with the Indiana Fever as first reported by ESPN’s Alexa Philippou. She leaves the Las Vegas Aces after a three year stint with the team. She won two championships with the team between 2022 and 2024, acting as a solid bench guard for them over that time.
Colson is a true veteran added to a 2025 Fever squad that seems to be rounding itself out. Indiana still had a slot to fill on their 12 player roster after signing DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard to one-year deals, and Jaelyn Brown to a training camp deal. They also landed Sophie Cunningham this offseason via trade. Colson averaged 2.5 points per game along with one assist in eight minutes per game in 2024, and acted as a great facilitator in place of Chelsea Gray throughout the season as she dealt with injuries.
This move also signals that the Aces are seemingly taking a different direction to free agency as they aim to position themselves for title contention once again. Given that the team still needs a new general manager, it’s surprising to see so much movement from the team prior to such an important hiring. They have now lost Colson and Kelsey Plum this offseason while also adding Jewell Loyd. And now, they may still lose Alysha Clark and Tiffany Hayes to free agency as neither have signed with the team again.
Major change has been the theme of the 2025 offseason for the WNBA, and both the Fever and Aces have been no exception to that theme.
